Introducción y contexto

Ayer aprendiste a reformular frases. Hoy subimos un nivel: resumir un texto completo. Resumir (to summarize) es identificar la información esencial y reexpresarla de forma mucho más breve, en tus propias palabras y sin tu opinión. Es una destreza central en TOEFL (integrated writing: lees + escuchas

Explicación detallada (regla por regla)

1. Identifica la idea principal (thesis). Suele estar en la primera o última frase de cada párrafo. Pregúntate: "¿De qué trata esto en una frase?"

2. Las 5 macro-reglas del resumen (van Dijk):

3. No incluyas: ejemplos concretos, anécdotas, cifras secundarias, tu opinión, ni expresiones como "I think the author is right." El resumen es objetivo.

4. Mantén la jerarquía del autor. Si el autor da más peso a una idea, tu resumen debe reflejarlo. No inviertas el énfasis.

5. Longitud. Un resumen típico es el 25–30 % del original (a veces menos). En TOEFL: 150–225 palabras. En Cambridge: respeta el límite indicado.

Tiempo verbal: el resumen se escribe normalmente en presente ("the author argues…"), aunque el texto narre el pasado.

Lee y resume en una sola frase (máx. 25 palabras): "Many people drink too much coffee. Coffee can keep you awake at night, increase anxiety and cause headaches. Doctors recommend no more than three cups a day. Some people even replace it with herbal tea to feel calmer."

Bloque 5 · Traducción (8 min)

Traduce al inglés:
