📖 Clase (60 min)

Introducción y contexto

Los idioms con animales y comida son de los más coloridos y memorables del inglés. Aparecen constantemente en conversación, prensa y TV. Lo interesante: muchas veces el español usa OTRO animal o alimento ("the elephant in the room" ≠ literal), así que el calco no funciona. Seguimos con la estrategia de familias temáticas: hoy, dos campos a la vez.

Explicación detallada (regla por regla)

1. ANIMALES.

• "the elephant in the room" → el tema evidente que nadie menciona. Let's address the elephant in the room.
• "to let the cat out of the bag" → revelar un secreto sin querer. He let the cat out of the bag about the party.
• "to kill two birds with one stone" → matar dos pájaros de un tiro. I'll kill two birds with one stone.
• "to have a frog in one's throat" → tener carraspera. Sorry, I have a frog in my throat.
• "to be the black sheep" → ser la oveja negra. He's the black sheep of the family.
• "a fish out of water" → como pez fuera del agua. I felt like a fish out of water.
• "to smell a rat" → sospechar (que algo va mal). Something's off — I smell a rat.
• "to take the bull by the horns" → coger el toro por los cuernos. She took the bull by the horns.

2. COMIDA.

• "a piece of cake" → muy fácil (visto en Sem. 47, se repasa).
• "to be the apple of one's eye" → ser el ojito derecho. She's the apple of her dad's eye.
• "to spill the beans" → revelar un secreto (repaso Sem. 47).
• "to have a lot on one's plate" → tener mucho entre manos. I have a lot on my plate this week.
• "to take something with a pinch of salt" → tomar algo con pinzas/escéptico. Take his story with a pinch of salt.
• "to butter someone up" → hacer la pelota. He's buttering up the boss.
• "to be a couch potato" → ser un teleadicto/sedentario. Don't be a couch potato.
• "that's not my cup of tea" → no es lo mío. Opera isn't my cup of tea.
• "to go bananas" → volverse loco/enloquecer. The crowd went bananas.

Vocabulario clave

Gramática a fondo

Idioms invariables (frases hechas): the elephant in the room, that's not my cup of tea, a fish out of water. El posesivo one's concuerda con el sujeto cuando aparece.

Pronunciación y notas de uso

• couch potato: /KÁUCH po-TÉI-tou/.
• not my cup of tea: muy británico; suaviza un rechazo ("no me va").
• the elephant in the room: muy usado en contextos serios/formales también.
• butter up es separable: butter the boss up / butter up the boss / butter him up (pronombre siempre en medio).
