📖 Clase (60 min)

Introducción y contexto

Los idioms con partes del cuerpo son omnipresentes en inglés conversacional: give me a hand, keep an eye on it, off the top of my head. Muchos tienen un equivalente español con OTRA parte del cuerpo (o ninguna), así que el calco falla. Hoy aprendemos los de mayor frecuencia, agrupados por parte del cuerpo para fijarlos mejor (estrategia de familias).

Explicación detallada (regla por regla)

1. HAND (mano).

"to give/lend someone a hand" → echar una mano. Can you give me a hand?
"to get out of hand" → descontrolarse. The party got out of hand.
"to have a hand in something" → tener parte en algo. She had a hand in the decision.
"on the other hand" → por otra parte. It's expensive; on the other hand, it lasts.

2. EYE (ojo).

"to keep an eye on" → vigilar. Can you keep an eye on my bag?
"to see eye to eye" → estar de acuerdo. We don't always see eye to eye.
"to turn a blind eye" → hacer la vista gorda. The teacher turned a blind eye.
"to catch someone's eye" → llamar la atención de alguien. That dress caught my eye.

3. HEAD (cabeza).

"off the top of one's head" → sin pensarlo, de memoria rápida. Off the top of my head, I'd say 50.
"to keep one's head" → no perder la calma. She kept her head in the crisis.
"to get something off one's chest" → desahogarse. I need to get this off my chest.
"to be over one's head" → quedar fuera del alcance/comprensión. The lecture was over my head.

4. OTRAS.

"to pull someone's leg" → tomar el pelo. Are you pulling my leg?
"to cost an arm and a leg" → carísimo (visto en Sem. 47).
"to put one's foot in it" → meter la pata. I put my foot in it badly.
"to play it by ear" → improvisar. Let's play it by ear.
"to get cold feet" → echarse atrás (por miedo). He got cold feet before the wedding.
"to keep one's fingers crossed" → cruzar los dedos. Keep your fingers crossed!

Pronunciación y notas de uso

eye to eye: se enlaza → "ái-tu-ái".
off the top of my head: muy usado como muletilla para dar un dato aproximado de memoria.
on the other hand es conector formal-neutro (útil en escritura argumentativa y exámenes).
keep your fingers crossed suele ir en imperativo o como deseo.
