📖 Clase (60 min)
- Reconocer: I am writing to apologise for... / I would like to apologise for...
- Explicar (breve, sin excusas largas): This was due to an unexpected system error.
- Solucionar: To resolve this, we will... / I have already...
- Reasegurar: We will make sure this does not happen again.
Grados: I'm sorry about... (leve) < I apologise for... (estándar) < I sincerely apologise for... / Please accept my apologies for... (formal, error serio).
Regla 2 — sorry for vs. sorry about vs. sorry to.
- sorry for + -ing / sustantivo → I'm sorry for the delay. / I'm sorry for replying late.
- sorry about + sustantivo → I'm sorry about the mix-up.
- sorry to + infinitivo → I'm sorry to inform you that... (al dar mala noticia).
Regla 3 — Comunicar malas noticias (cushioning). No empieces con el golpe; prepara:
- Thank you for your patience. After careful consideration, I'm afraid we are unable to...
- Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond our control, the delivery will be delayed.
- I regret to inform you that... (muy formal, malas noticias serias).
- I'm afraid I have some bad news regarding...
Fórmulas suavizadoras: I'm afraid..., Unfortunately..., regrettably..., I'm sorry to say..., As things stand...
Regla 4 — Decir "no" / rechazar con diplomacia. Estructura: agradecer + amortiguar + negar + alternativa.
- Thank you for the offer. Unfortunately, we won't be able to proceed at this time. However, we'd be happy to revisit this in Q3.
- ✗ No, we can't. → ✓ I'm afraid that won't be possible.
Regla 5 — Queja formal (4 pasos):
- Contexto/hecho: I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the service on 12 May.
- Problema objetivo: The order arrived three days late and two items were missing.
- Efecto: This caused a delay in our own delivery to clients.
- Petición de solución: I would appreciate a full refund / I would be grateful if you could resolve this within 7 days.
Tono: firme pero sin insultos. I am disappointed that... (no This is terrible / unacceptable solo, que cierra la negociación).
Regla 6 — Responder a una queja. Reconocer + disculparse + solución + reasegurar:
- Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I sincerely apologise for the inconvenience. We will issue a full refund within 48 hours and have reviewed our process to prevent this in future.

Patrón clave: I regret to inform you that + oración (no I regret informing). Mientras que I regret + -ing significa "lamentar haber hecho" (pasado): I regret sending that email = lamento haberlo enviado.
Patrón: I'm afraid + oración = forma estándar y educadísima de introducir algo negativo; no implica miedo.
Pronunciación y notas de uso
- apologise /əˈpɒlədʒaɪz/ — a-PÓ-lo-yais (UK -ise / US -ize).
