Día 220 · El espectro de certeza (must · might · may · could · can't)
⏱️ Duración total: ~3 h 15 min — Clase 60 min · Ejercicios 60 min · Reto 60 min · Quiz ~15 min.
📖 Clase (60 min)
Introducción y contexto
Ya conoces las piezas: must (casi seguro que sí), can't (casi seguro que no) y might/may/could (posible).
| Certeza | Modal | Significado | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100% (hecho) | — (presente simple) | es así | She is a doctor. |
| ~95% | must | debe de ser | She must be a doctor. |
| ~50% | might / may / could | puede que sea | She might be a doctor. |
| ~5% | can't | no puede ser | She can't be a doctor. |
| 0% (hecho) | — (negativo) | no es así | She isn't a doctor. |
Idea visual: must → might/may/could → can't es una rampa de "muy seguro que sí" a "muy seguro que no".
Regla 2 — Elegir el modal según tus pistas.
- Pruebas fuertes a favor → must: He has a key, so he must live here.
- Pruebas débiles / varias opciones → might/may/could: He has a bag; he might be travelling.
- Pruebas que lo descartan → can't: He can't live here; this is my house.
Regla 3 — Afinar con adverbios.
- Reforzar must: He must definitely be the owner. / He is definitely the owner.
- Matizar la posibilidad: She could possibly be French. / Perhaps she's French.
- Probabilidad alta sin must: He'll probably be late.
Orden típico: el adverbio va junto al verbo principal: must certainly be, could possibly be, is probably.
Regla 4 — Encadenar deducciones (razonamiento).
- It can't be Tom (he's abroad), and it can't be Sam (he's at work), so it must be Alex.
- The door's locked, so they must have left; or they might be asleep.
Regla 5 — Preguntar especulando.
Para preguntar especulando se usa could / might: Who could that be? / Could it be true? / Where might she be? (No se suele preguntar con must).

|---|---|---|
| Casi seguro sí | must (+ be/-ing) | He must be lying. |
| Posible | might/may/could (+ be/-ing) | He might be lying. |
| Casi seguro no | can't (+ be/-ing) | He can't be lying. |
| Reforzar | adverbio + modal | He must definitely know. |
| Pregunta especulativa | Could/Might + sujeto + base | Could she be the thief? |
Error frecuente: "definitively" (otra palabra). Di definitely.
- probably en habla rápida ≈ "próbli".
- Could it be…? /kʊd ɪt biː/: entonación ascendente al final (pregunta).
Errores comunes del hispanohablante
- ✗ Must he be the boss? (pregunta de deducción) → ✓ Could he be the boss?
- ✗ He must to be definitely right. → ✓ He must definitely be right.
- ✗ It can be true (queriendo decir "no puede ser") → ✓ It can't be true.
- ✗ She mustn't be the owner (= no puede ser) → ✓ She can't be the owner.
- ✗ He is probably knows → ✓ He probably knows. / He must know.
- ✗ Usar siempre maybe y nunca los modales: varía con must/might/could/can't.
Mini-diálogo de ejemplo
A: There's a light on upstairs. Who could it be? (Hay una luz arriba. ¿Quién podría ser?) B: It can't be your sister — she's in Madrid.
