⏱️ Duración total: ~3 h 15 min — Clase 60 min · Ejercicios 60 min · Reto 60 min · Quiz ~15 min.
- Construirás la forma negativa might not / may not.
- Distinguirás el grado de certeza entre must y might/may/could.
- Especularás sobre situaciones presentes y futuras.
- Diferenciarás could de posibilidad de could de habilidad pasada.
📖 Clase (60 min)
En inglés se hace con tres modales casi intercambiables: might, may, could.
He might be at home = "Puede que esté en casa" (quizá sí, quizá no).
Regla 1 — MIGHT / MAY / COULD = posibilidad (~50%).
Estructura: subject + might/may/could + base verb.
- It might rain later. → Puede que llueva más tarde.
- She may be at the library. → Puede que esté en la biblioteca.
- They could be stuck in traffic.
- may: ligeramente más formal (textos, avisos).
Regla 2 — Negativo: might not / may not (≠ couldn't).
- He might not come to the party. → Puede que no venga a la fiesta.
- She may not know the answer.
Para "puede que no", usa might not / may not, no could not.
Regla 3 — Posibilidad sobre acciones en curso: might be + -ing.
- She's not answering. She might be driving. → No contesta. Puede que esté conduciendo.
- They may be having dinner now. → Puede que estén cenando ahora.
Regla 4 — Posibilidad en el futuro.
- I might go to the beach this weekend.
- It may snow tomorrow. → Puede que nieve mañana.
Regla 5 — could posibilidad vs. could habilidad pasada.
- Posibilidad presente/futura: The keys could be in the car. → Las llaves podrían estar en el coche.
- Habilidad pasada (ya conocida): When I was young, I could run fast.

Gramática a fondo
| Significado | Estructura | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| Posibilidad (presente) | might/may/could + base | He might know. |
| Posibilidad (estado) | might/may/could be | She may be ill. |
| Posibilidad (acción) | might/may/could be + -ing | They might be working. |
| Posibilidad (futuro) | might/may/could + base | It may rain tomorrow. |
| Negativo | might not / may not + base | He might not come. |
No existe might to, mays, coulds: los modales son invariables, sin to y sin -s.
Pronunciación y notas de uso
- might /maɪt/ rima con "night"; may /meɪ/ con "day".
- might not rara vez se contrae a mightn't (poco usado hoy); di might not entero.
- En avisos formales verás may: Passengers may not smoke (= no está permitido), distinto del may de posibilidad. El contexto lo aclara.
Errores comunes del hispanohablante
- ✗ He maybe come. → ✓ He might come. / Maybe he will come. (maybe ≠ may be)
- ✗ She mights be late. → ✓ She might be late. (sin -s)
- ✗ It might to rain. → ✓ It might rain. (sin to)
- ✗ He couldn't be at home (queriendo decir "puede que no esté") → ✓ He might not be at home.
- ✗ They may to be tired. → ✓ They may be tired.
- ✗ Maybe (una palabra, adverbio) ≠ may be (modal + be): Maybe she's tired / She may be tired.
