📖 Clase (60 min)
Introducción y contexto
Hasta ahora has deducido sobre el presente (He must be tired — debe de estar cansado ahora). Pero la mayoría de los misterios son sobre el pasado: "¿qué pasó aquí?", "¿quién hizo esto?", "¿por qué no vino?". Para deducir sobre algo que ya ocurrió el inglés usa el modal + have + participio pasado: must have + participle, might have + participle, can't have + participle.
Esta es la estructura estrella para resolver misterios y comentar el pasado de forma matizada (aparece muchísimo en exámenes B1/B2 y en conversación natural: "You must have been exhausted!"). El reto para el hispanohablante es doble: (1) recordar usar have + participio (no el pasado simple) y (2) que en habla rápida must have suena "must've" /məstəv/, que el oído español confunde con "must of". Hoy lo dejamos claro con muchos ejemplos.
Explicación detallada (regla por regla)
Regla 1 — MUST HAVE + participio = deducción pasada casi segura ("debe de haber…").
- The ground is wet. It must have rained. → El suelo está mojado. Debe de haber llovido.
- She's not here. She must have left early. → No está. Debe de haberse ido pronto.
- You passed! You must have studied a lot. → ¡Aprobaste! Debes de haber estudiado mucho.
Estructura: subject + must have + past participle.
Regla 2 — MIGHT / MAY / COULD HAVE + participio = posibilidad pasada ("puede que haya…").
- He's late. He might have missed the train. → Llega tarde. Puede que haya perdido el tren.
- She didn't call. She may have forgotten. → No llamó. Puede que se haya olvidado.
- They could have taken the wrong road. → Podrían haberse equivocado de carretera.
Regla 3 — CAN'T HAVE / COULDN'T HAVE + participio = imposibilidad pasada ("no puede haber…").
- He can't have finished already; it's too hard. → No puede haber terminado ya; es muy difícil.
- She couldn't have seen me; I wasn't there. → No pudo haberme visto; yo no estaba allí.
⚠️ El negativo es can't have / couldn't have, NUNCA mustn't have.
Regla 4 — Estado pasado: must have been + adjetivo / -ing.
- That must have been difficult. → Eso debe de haber sido difícil.
- You must have been waiting for hours! → ¡Debes de haber estado esperando horas!
- He might have been sleeping. → Puede que estuviera durmiendo.
Regla 5 — Presente vs. pasado (clave para no confundir).
| Deducción presente | Deducción pasada |
|---|---|
| He must be tired. (ahora) | He must have been tired. (entonces) |
| She might be at home. | She might have been at home. |
| It can't be true. | It can't have been true. |

Gramática a fondo
| Significado | Estructura | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| Casi seguro (pasado) | must have + participio | She must have left. |
| Posible (pasado) | might/may/could have + participio | He might have missed it. |
| Imposible (pasado) | can't/couldn't have + participio | They can't have known. |
| Estado pasado | must have been (+ adj./-ing) | It must have been hard. |
Forma fija: modal + have + participio pasado (no pasado simple): ✗ must have went → ✓ must have gone.
Pronunciación y notas de uso
- must have → "must've" /məstəv/; might have → "might've"; could have → "could've". Es have, no of: ✗ escribir must of es un error (aunque suene parecido).
- Recuerda los participios irregulares: go→gone, see→seen, take→taken, break→broken, leave→left, forget→forgotten, be→been.
- can't have suena "kant'v"; mantén la t para que se distinga de can have.
Errores comunes del hispanohablante
- ✗ He must left early. → ✓ He must have left early.
- ✗ She must have went home. → ✓ She must have gone home.
- ✗ They mustn't have seen us. → ✓ They can't have seen us.
- ✗ He must of forgotten. → ✓ He must have forgotten.
- ✗ It must was difficult. → ✓ It must have been difficult.
- ✗ She might forgot. → ✓ She might have forgotten.
Mini-diálogo de ejemplo

A: So someone must have left in a hurry. (Así que alguien debe de haberse ido con prisa.) B: Maybe Tom. He might have forgotten to lock up. (Quizá Tom. Puede que se haya olvidado de cerrar.)
