📖 Clase (60 min)
If + condición**,** resultado. = Resultado if + condición.
- If it rains**,** we will stay home. = We will stay home if it rains.
El significado es el mismo. Solo cambia el énfasis y la puntuación.
Regla 2 — La coma depende del orden.
- If al principio → coma entre las dos partes:
- If you study, you will pass.
- If al final → sin coma:
- You will pass if you study.
Regla 3 — El resultado puede llevar can (posibilidad/permiso).
- If you finish early, you can go home. → Si terminas pronto, puedes irte a casa.
- If it's sunny, we can have a picnic. → Si hace sol, podemos hacer un picnic.
Regla 4 — El resultado puede llevar may / might (probabilidad).
- If it rains, we might cancel the trip. → Si llueve, quizá cancelemos el viaje.
- If you ask her, she may say yes. → Si se lo pides, puede que diga que sí.
may y might expresan menos seguridad que will. might es ligeramente más dudoso.
Regla 5 — El resultado puede ser un imperativo.
- If you see John, tell him to call me. → Si ves a John, dile que me llame.
- If you're tired, take a break. → Si estás cansado, tómate un descanso.
- If it rains, don't forget your umbrella. → Si llueve, no olvides el paraguas.
Escala de certeza del resultado:
| Estructura | Grado de certeza | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| will | seguro / muy probable | If it rains, I will stay. |
| can | posibilidad / opción | If it rains, we can watch a film. |
| may | posible (50/50) | If it rains, we may stay. |
| might | menos probable / quizá | If it rains, we might stay. |
| imperativo | instrucción | If it rains, stay inside. |
Vocabulario clave

| can | kan | poder (posibilidad/permiso) |
| may | méi | poder (posible) |
| might | máit | quizá / puede que |

| comma | cóma | coma |
| clause | clos | cláusula |

Gramática a fondo
| Orden | Coma | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| If + condición primero | Sí | If you ask, I'll help. |
| Resultado primero | No | I'll help if you ask. |
| Resultado | Forma | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| Futuro seguro | will + base | I will call you. |
| Posibilidad/opción | can + base | you can leave. |
| Probabilidad | may/might + base | we might go. |
| Instrucción | imperativo | tell him. |
Nota: la cláusula if sigue siempre en presente, da igual el orden y el tipo de resultado: If it rains, we might stay.
Pronunciación y notas de uso
- might /maɪt/ y may /meɪ/: vocales distintas, practícalas.
- can débil en afirmativa: "you can go" → /kən/. Fuerte en negativa: can't /kɑːnt/.
- La coma en la escritura corresponde a una pequeña pausa al hablar cuando if va primero.
Errores comunes del hispanohablante
- ✗ You will pass, if you study. (coma incorrecta con if al final) → ✓ You will pass if you study.
- ✗ If you study you will pass. (falta coma con if al inicio) → ✓ If you study, you will pass.
- ✗ If it will rain, we might stay. → ✓ If it rains, we might stay. (if + presente siempre)
- ✗ If you see him, you tell him → ✓ If you see him, tell him. (imperativo sin sujeto)
- ✗ We can to go if it's sunny. → ✓ We can go if it's sunny. (can + base, sin to)
Mini-diálogo de ejemplo
