Introducción y contexto

Un binomial es una expresión fija formada por dos palabras unidas por and (a veces or), en un orden invariable: safe and sound, NUNCA sound and safe. Son frecuentísimos en inglés hablado y escrito, y usarlos bien suena muy natural. El orden suele estar fijado por la fonética (la palabra corta o con vocal más cerrada suele ir primero) y por la tradición. Hoy aprendemos los de mayor uso y cerramos el bloque léxico de la fase.

Explicación detallada (regla por regla)

1. Binomials con and (orden fijo).

• safe and sound → sano y salvo. They arrived safe and sound.
• back and forth → de un lado a otro. He paced back and forth.
• now and then / now and again → de vez en cuando. We meet now and then.
• sooner or later → tarde o temprano. You'll learn it sooner or later.
• more or less → más o menos. It's more or less done.
• bits and pieces / bits and bobs → cositas varias. I bought a few bits and pieces.
• ups and downs → altibajos. Every relationship has its ups and downs.
• pros and cons → pros y contras. Let's weigh the pros and cons.
• give or take → más o menos (con cifras). Fifty people, give or take.
• here and there → aquí y allá. We travelled here and there.
• sick and tired (of) → harto de. I'm sick and tired of waiting.
• peace and quiet → paz y tranquilidad. I just want some peace and quiet.

2. Binomials con palabra repetida.

• little by little → poco a poco. He's improving little by little.
• step by step → paso a paso. Follow it step by step.
• again and again → una y otra vez. I told him again and again.
• more and more → cada vez más. It's getting more and more popular.
• on and on → sin parar (hablar). She went on and on about it.

Gramática a fondo

El orden es memorización pura: no hay una regla universal, aunque a menudo manda el ritmo. Apréndelos como bloques, igual que los idioms.

Pronunciación y notas de uso

• En binomials con and, la and casi siempre se reduce a /ən/: safe-ən- sound, back-ən-forth.
• give or take va al final, con cifras: "It's 20 km, give or take."
• to be honest y to be fair son muletillas suavizadoras muy útiles para introducir una opinión.
• at the end of the day (a fin de cuentas) ≠ in the end (al final, cronológico). No confundir.
