- Evitarás mezclar if con la inversión y los errores de tiempo verbal.

Introducción y contexto
Ayer aprendiste la inversión tras adverbios negativos. Hoy llega la inversión condicional, una de las marcas más claras de un inglés culto y elegante. En registro formal, se puede eliminar if e invertir el auxiliar para formar la condición. Es muy usada en escritura formal, discursos, contratos y literatura.
- Con if: If I had known, I would have helped. (Si lo hubiera sabido, habría ayudado.)
- Inversión: Had I known, I would have helped.
- Con if: If you should need help, call me. (Si necesitaras ayuda, llámame.)
- Inversión: Should you need help, call me.
Añadimos también la inversión con So y Such para enfatizar cualidades de forma dramática: So great was the noise that we couldn't hear. Es el broche del bloque de estructuras enfáticas.
Explicación detallada (regla por regla)
Regla 1 — Tercer condicional sin if → Had + sujeto + participio.
- If she had asked, I would have said yes. → Had she asked, I would have said yes. (Si hubiera preguntado, habría dicho que sí.)
- Negativo: Had it not been for her, we would have failed. → De no ser por ella, habríamos fracasado.
Regla 2 — Segundo condicional con be → Were + sujeto.
- If I were you, I wouldn't go. → Were I you, I wouldn't go. (Si yo fuera tú, no iría.)
- If the plan were simpler… → Were the plan simpler…
Regla 3 — Segundo condicional (otros verbos) → Were + sujeto + to + infinitivo.
- If the company collapsed… → Were the company to collapse, thousands would lose their jobs.
Regla 4 — Primer condicional formal → Should + sujeto + infinitivo (= "si acaso / en caso de que").
- If you need anything, ask. → Should you need anything, ask. (En caso de que necesites algo, pregunta.)
- Should you have any questions, contact us. → Si tuviera alguna pregunta, contáctenos. (típico de cartas formales.)
Regla 5 — So + adjetivo/adverbio + be + sujeto + that… (énfasis en grado).
- So loud was the music that the neighbours called the police. → Tan alta estaba la música que los vecinos llamaron a la policía.
- So quickly did he run that nobody could catch him.
Regla 6 — Such + (a) + nombre + be + sujeto + that….
- Such was her talent that everyone admired her. → Tal era su talento que todos la admiraban.
- Such a mess was the room that we spent hours cleaning.

- En la inversión negativa del 3º condicional la negación va separada: Had it not been for… (no Hadn't it been for).
- ✗ Nunca combines: If had I known… — usa o if o inversión, nunca los dos.
Pronunciación y notas de uso
- Had I known /hæd aɪ nəʊn/ — enlaza "ha-dai-nown"; entonación descendente al final de la cláusula.
- Registro muy formal; típico en cartas comerciales (Should you require further information…), discursos y ensayos. Suena pomposo en charla casual.
- Were it not for… y Had it not been for… son fórmulas fijas elegantísimas para escritura argumentativa.
Errores comunes del hispanohablante
- ✗ If had I known… → ✓ Had I known… (sin if al invertir.)
- ✗ Had I knew… → ✓ Had I known… (participio, no pasado simple.)
- ✗ Was I you, I wouldn't go. → ✓ Were I you, I wouldn't go. (siempre were.)
- ✗ Hadn't it been for her… → ✓ Had it not been for her… (negación separada en registro formal.)
- ✗ Should you to need help… → ✓ Should you need help… (infinitivo sin to.)
- ✗ So loud the music was that… → ✓ So loud was the music that… (orden: So + adj + be + sujeto.)
