📖 Clase (60 min)
Introducción y contexto
Ayer aprendiste las it-cleft (It was John who called).
La estructura es: What + [sujeto + verbo] + is/was + [el foco]. Funciona como si dijeras "Lo que… es…":
- Neutra: I need rest. (Necesito descanso.)
- What-cleft: What I need is rest. (Lo que necesito es descanso.)
- Neutra: He broke the vase. (Rompió el jarrón.)
- What-cleft, foco en acción: What he did was (to) break the vase. (Lo que hizo fue romper el jarrón.)
Esta estructura es enormemente útil en presentaciones y debate: What we should do first is define the problem ("Lo que deberíamos hacer primero es definir el problema").
What + cláusula + be + foco. El What equivale a "Lo que".
- What I love about Italy is the food.
- What worries me is the cost. → Lo que me preocupa es el coste.
Regla 2 — Concordancia del verbo be. Como el sujeto gramatical es What (singular), be casi siempre va en singular, aunque el foco sea plural (en inglés cuidado, con focos plurales algunos hablantes usan are; en C1 lo seguro y aceptado es singular salvo foco claramente plural enumerado).
- What we need is more time. (singular)
- What I bought were two tickets. (foco plural concreto → were aceptable)
Regla 3 — Énfasis en la acción con What… do. Para enfatizar un verbo, usa What + sujeto + do/does/did + be + (to) infinitivo.
- What she did was (to) call the police.
- What you should do is (to) apologise. → Lo que deberías hacer es disculparte.
Regla 4 — Variantes con All. All + sujeto + verbo + be + foco = "Lo único que…".
- All I want is a coffee. → Lo único que quiero es un café.
- All he did was complain. → Lo único que hizo fue quejarse.
Regla 5 — Variantes con The thing / The reason. Sustituyen a What para precisar.
- The thing that bothers me is his tone. → Lo que me molesta es su tono.
- The reason (why) I called is to thank you.
Regla 6 — What-cleft invertida. El foco puede ir delante: Rest is what I need. (Descanso es lo que necesito.) Útil para contrastar.

Gramática a fondo
| Tipo | Estructura | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| What-cleft (objeto/idea) | What + S + V + be + foco | What I need is help. |
| What-cleft (acción) | What + S + do + be + (to) inf. | What he did was leave. |
| All-cleft | All + S + V + be + foco | All I want is peace. |
| The thing/reason | The thing that… is… | The reason I'm late is traffic. |
| Invertida | Foco + be + what + S + V | Help is what I need. |
- Tras What he did was, el infinitivo puede llevar to o no: was (to) leave.
- What /wɒt/ → "wot"; no pronuncies la h. En conexión: what I → "woddai".
The thing is… es más coloquial.
- Pausa breve antes del foco para crear el efecto de suspense: What we should do is… define the problem.
Errores comunes del hispanohablante
- ✗ What I need is rest dicho como The that I need… o That I need is rest. → ✓ What I need is rest. (en inglés es What, no That; "Lo que" = What.)
- ✗ What I need are rest. → ✓ What I need is rest. (concordancia: What es singular.)
- ✗ What he did was broke the vase. → ✓ What he did was (to) break the vase. (infinitivo, no pasado.)
- ✗ The reason because I called… → ✓ The reason (why) I called… (no because.)
- ✗ All what I want is… → ✓ All I want is… (no what tras all.)
- ✗ What is important is to study dicho What important is… → ✓ What is important is to study. (no omitas el verbo de la cláusula.)
Mini-diálogo de ejemplo
A: I'm so frustrated with this project. (Estoy muy frustrado con este proyecto.) B: OK, let's slow down. What exactly is bothering you is the deadline, right? (Vale, vamos despacio. A: Yes. What we need is more people, not more meetings. B: Agreed. What I'd do first is talk to the manager. A: All I want is a realistic plan. B: Then the thing to do is put it in writing today.
