📖 Clase (60 min)
Un nativo no dice "We will postpone the meeting" en una conversación informal de oficina: dice "Let's put the meeting off" o "push it back". Y no dice "reduce costs" charlando con un colega: dice "cut back on costs".
- set up (montar/crear): We set up a new branch. (= establish)
- carry out (llevar a cabo): We carried out a survey. (= conduct)
- put off / push back (aplazar): Let's put the launch off. (= postpone)
- bring forward (adelantar): They brought the meeting forward. (= move earlier)
- call off (cancelar): They called off the deal. (= cancel)
- follow up (on) (hacer seguimiento): I'll follow up on that.
Regla 2 — Phrasal verbs de finanzas y negocio.
- cut back (on) (recortar): We had to cut back on travel. (= reduce)
- take on (contratar/asumir): We took on five new staff. (= hire / assume)
- lay off (despedir por recortes): The firm laid off 20 workers. (= make redundant)
- break even (cubrir gastos): We broke even in year two.
- take over (adquirir/asumir el control): A larger firm took us over. (= acquire)
- write off (amortizar/dar por perdido): We wrote off the debt.
Regla 3 — Phrasal verbs de reuniones y comunicación.
- go over (repasar): Let's go over the figures. (= review)
- bring up (sacar un tema): She brought up a good point. (= raise)
- point out (señalar): He pointed out an error. (= indicate)
- sum up (resumir): To sum up,... (= summarise)
- put forward (proponer): I'd like to put forward a proposal. (= propose)
- back up (respaldar / hacer copia): The data backs up our claim.
Regla 4 — Separables vs. inseparables.
- Separables: el objeto puede ir en medio o detrás: set up the system / set the system up. Si es pronombre, va OBLIGATORIAMENTE en medio: ✗ set up it → ✓ set it up.
- Inseparables: el objeto va siempre después de la partícula: go over the figures (no go the figures over); también follow up on, cut back on.
- Regla práctica: la mayoría de los de 2 partes son separables; los de 3 partes (follow up on, cut back on, look forward to) son inseparables.
Regla 5 — El sustantivo derivado.
- to set up → a setup / to take over → a takeover / to break out → an outbreak / to follow up → a follow-up / to lay off → layoffs / to cut back → cutbacks.
Vocabulario clave

Gramática a fondo — separabilidad
| Phrasal verb | Tipo | ✓ Correcto | ✗ Incorrecto |
|---|---|---|---|
| set up | separable | set it up / set the plan up | set up it |
| call off | separable | call it off / call the deal off | call off it |
| go over | inseparable | go over them / go over the figures | go them over |
| follow up on | inseparable (3 partes) | follow up on it | follow it up on |
| cut back on | inseparable (3 partes) | cut back on costs | cut costs back on |
| put forward | separable | put it forward | put forward it |
Regla de oro: con un pronombre objeto (it, them, him), si el verbo es separable, el pronombre va siempre en medio (call it off). Si es inseparable, va después de la partícula (go over it).
- ✗ set up it → ✓ set it up (pronombre en medio en separables).
- ✗ go the figures over → ✓ go over the figures (inseparable).
- ✗ follow it up on → ✓ follow up on it (3 partes, inseparable).
- ✗ We will postpone the meeting (correcto pero formal/escrito) en charla informal → más natural let's push the meeting back.
- ✗ They fired 20 workers for crisis → ✓ They laid off 20 workers. (despido por recortes ≠ fire por mala conducta).
- ✗ bring up the meeting (=adelantar) → ✓ bring forward the meeting (bring up = sacar un tema).
- ✗ Confundir take on (contratar/asumir) con take over (adquirir/tomar el control).
Mini-diálogo de ejemplo

Aún queremos contratar a dos ingenieros. Pero cancela el congreso.) Ana: I'll call it off today and follow up on the refunds. Manager: Good.
