📖 Clase (60 min)

Introducción y contexto

Bienvenido a la Semana 40. Ya conoces el primer condicional (real, futuro: If it rains, I'll stay) y el segundo (irreal, presente/futuro: If I were rich, I'd travel). Hoy completas la familia con el tercer condicional, que habla de lo que NO pasó en el pasado y de sus consecuencias imaginarias. Es la gramática del arrepentimiento, la reflexión y la hipótesis histórica: If I had studied more, I would have passed the exam (pero no estudié, así que no aprobé).

Es una estructura muy "humana": pensamos constantemente en cómo habrían cambiado las cosas si hubiéramos actuado distinto. En inglés B2/C1 es imprescindible para narrar, analizar errores, especular sobre la historia y expresar emociones complejas. Para el hispanohablante el reto es doble: (1) la forma es larga (would have + participio), y (2) hay que resistir la tentación de poner would en la parte del if (el famoso error if I would have). Tu español lo hace bien — "Si hubiera estudiado, habría aprobado" — así que la lógica te ayudará; solo hay que mapear las formas.

Explicación detallada (regla por regla)

Regla 1 — La estructura. Dos partes:

• Cláusula condicional (if): If + sujeto + had + participio pasado
• Cláusula resultado: sujeto + would have + participio pasado

If I had known, I would have called you. (Si lo hubiera sabido, te habría llamado.)

Regla 2 — Significado: pasado IRREAL. Lo que se dice es contrario a lo que realmente pasó. If she had studied, she would have passed implica: ella NO estudió y NO aprobó. Es pura hipótesis sobre algo ya cerrado.

Regla 3 — El orden es reversible (coma). Igual que en otros condicionales:

• If I had left earlier, I wouldn't have missed the train.
• I wouldn't have missed the train if I had left earlier. (sin coma cuando el if va segundo)

Regla 4 — Contracciones (clave para sonar natural):

• had → 'd: If I'd known... (= If I had known)
• would have → 'd have / would've: I'd have helped / I would've helped
• En negativo: hadn't, wouldn't have: If you hadn't helped, I wouldn't have finished.

⚠️ Cuidado: I'd puede significar I had (en el if) o I would (en el resultado). El contexto lo aclara.

Regla 5 — El error capital: NUNCA would en la cláusula if.

• ✗ If I would have known... → ✓ If I had known...
• El would SOLO va en la cláusula del resultado. Esta es la regla más violada por hispanohablantes (y también por nativos informales, pero en examen es error).

Regla 6 — Negativas y mezclas afirmativo/negativo. Las cuatro combinaciones son posibles:

• (+/+) If I had seen it, I would have bought it.
• (−/+) If I hadn't been busy, I would have come.
• (+/−) If you had told me, I wouldn't have worried.
• (−/−) If she hadn't lied, we wouldn't have argued.

Regla 7 — Preguntas. What would you have done if you had been there? (¿Qué habrías hecho si hubieras estado allí?) — would + sujeto + have + participio en la pregunta.

Gramática a fondo

Modales en el resultado. Puedes sustituir would have por could have (posibilidad) o might have (probabilidad menor):

• If I had had time, I could have helped. (habría podido)
• If we had left earlier, we might have caught it. (quizá habríamos)

Pronunciación y notas de uso

• would have se reduce a /ˈwʊdəv/ ("wood-əv"), casi nunca "would HAVE" lento.
• ⚠️ would've suena igual que would of — por eso muchos lo escriben mal. La forma escrita correcta es would have / would've, nunca would of.
• had en If I'd known es átono y casi se funde: /aɪd ˈnəʊn/.
• regret /rɪˈɡret/ — acento en la segunda sílaba.

Errores comunes del hispanohablante

• ✗ If I would have known, I would have called. → ✓ If I had known, I would have called.
• ✗ If I had knew... → ✓ If I had known... (participio, no pasado simple)
• ✗ I would have call you. → ✓ I would have called you. (participio tras have)
• ✗ If she had study, she would pass. → ✓ If she had studied, she would have passed.
• ✗ Escribir would of → ✓ would have / would've.
• ✗ If I would be there... (eso es mezcla incorrecta) → ✓ If I had been there...
