📖 Clase (60 min)

Introducción y contexto

Esta semana entramos en un tema muy útil y muy frecuente: cómo decir que algo existe o que algo está en un lugar. En español usamos una sola palabra mágica para todo esto: "hay". Decimos "hay una mesa", "hay tres sillas", "hay leche en la nevera". En inglés esa idea se expresa con dos estructuras gemelas: there is y there are.

La gran ventaja para ti es que el concepto es idéntico al español. La única novedad es que el inglés distingue entre singular y plural, algo que el "hay" español no hace. Por eso hoy aprenderás a elegir correctamente entre there is (una cosa) y there are (varias cosas). Lo combinaremos con vocabulario de comida y de la cocina, porque describir lo que tienes en casa es una de las situaciones más prácticas para usar esta estructura: pensar en voz alta qué comprar, contarle a alguien qué hay para cenar, o describir una foto.

Un punto clave que repetiremos mucho: "hay" NO se traduce como have (eso es un error clásico del hispanohablante que veremos en detalle). "Hay pan" nunca es "have bread"; es there is bread.

Explicación detallada (regla por regla)

Regla 1 — There is = hay (una cosa, singular).

Usamos there is cuando hablamos de un solo elemento o de algo incontable (como milk, bread, water).

• There is a book on the table. → Hay un libro en la mesa.
• There is a problem. → Hay un problema.
• There is milk in the fridge. → Hay leche en la nevera.
• There is a supermarket near my house. → Hay un supermercado cerca de mi casa.

Regla 2 — There are = hay (varias cosas, plural).

Usamos there are cuando hablamos de dos o más elementos (sustantivos en plural).

• There are three apples in the bowl. → Hay tres manzanas en el bol.
• There are many people here. → Hay mucha gente aquí.
• There are two eggs in the fridge. → Hay dos huevos en la nevera.
• There are some tomatoes on the table. → Hay unos tomates en la mesa.

Regla 3 — La contracción there's.

En conversación, there is casi siempre se acorta a there's. There are normalmente no se contrae al escribir formalmente (aunque en habla rápida suena pegado).

• There's a cat in the garden. → Hay un gato en el jardín.
• There's some cheese in the fridge. → Hay queso en la nevera.

Regla 4 — El orden de la frase.

La estructura es fija: There + is/are + (cantidad/artículo) + sustantivo + (lugar).

• There + is + a + lamp + in the room.
• There + are + four + chairs + in the kitchen.

No empieces la frase con el sustantivo. "A book is on the table" es gramaticalmente posible pero suena raro para describir existencia; lo natural es There is a book on the table.

Vocabulario clave

Gramática a fondo

Sustantivos incontables: palabras como milk, water, bread, cheese, rice, coffee no tienen plural normal y siempre van con there is (there is milk, nunca there are milks). Los veremos a fondo en el Día 59 con some/any.

There is vs. It is. Son cosas diferentes:

• There is a restaurant. = Existe / hay un restaurante (informa de existencia).
• It is a good restaurant. = Es un buen restaurante (describe algo ya conocido).

Pronunciación y notas de uso

• There se pronuncia /der/, con la "th" suave (lengua entre los dientes, vibrando) y SIN la "h". No digas "zere" ni "dere" duro: el sonido /ð/ es suave.
• There's suena como "ders", una sola sílaba rápida.
• There are suena pegado: "der-ar".
• Cuidado: there, their y they're suenan igual pero significan cosas distintas. Hoy solo usamos there (hay/allí).

Errores comunes del hispanohablante

• ✗ Have a book on the table. → ✓ There is a book on the table. ("Hay" ≠ have.)
• ✗ It has many people. → ✓ There are many people. (No uses have/has para "hay".)
• ✗ There is two cats. → ✓ There are two cats. (Plural → are.)
• ✗ There are a chair. → ✓ There is a chair. (Singular → is.)
• ✗ There is milks. → ✓ There is milk. (Milk es incontable.)
• ✗ In the table there is a book. (orden raro) → ✓ There is a book on the table.
