Introducción y contexto

El tiempo es uno de los campos semánticos más ricos en idioms del inglés, porque la cultura anglosajona valora mucho la puntualidad y la eficiencia. Hablar de plazos, esperas y urgencias con idioms te hará sonar natural en el trabajo y en la vida diaria. Hoy aprendemos una familia temática completa: recuerda la estrategia del Día 323, agrupar por tema fija mejor el recuerdo.

Explicación detallada (regla por regla)

1. Idioms de "rapidez/urgencia".

• "in the nick of time" → justo a tiempo (en el último momento). He arrived in the nick of time to catch the train.
• "against the clock" → contrarreloj. We're working against the clock to finish.
• "to beat the clock" → terminar antes del plazo. We beat the clock and delivered early.
• "to make a long story short" → para resumir. Make a long story short, we missed the flight.

2. Idioms de "esperar / perder el tiempo".

• "to kill time" → matar el tiempo. I killed time reading while I waited.
• "to drag on" → alargarse pesadamente. The meeting dragged on for hours.
• "in the long run" → a la larga. Studying now pays off in the long run.
• "to call it a day" → dar algo por terminado (por hoy). We've done enough — let's call it a day.

3. Idioms de "oportunidad/momento".

• "better late than never" → más vale tarde que nunca. You finally called — better late than never!
• "the time is ripe" → es el momento oportuno. The time is ripe to launch.
• "to take a rain check" → posponer una invitación. Can I take a rain check on dinner?
• "around the clock" → las 24 horas. The hospital works around the clock.

4. Registro. Call it a day, kill time, take a rain check son informales/neutros (conversación). In the long run, against the clock son neutros y válidos hasta en contextos semiformales. Evita los muy coloquiales en un email formal.

Vocabulario clave

Gramática a fondo

Algunos son frases completas invariables que se usan como comentario: "Better late than never", "Time flies", "The time is ripe". No se conjugan; se sueltan como expresión hecha.

Pronunciación y notas de uso

• in the nick of time: enlace fuerte → "in-the-nick-of-time", la of se reduce a /əv/.
• at the eleventh hour: cuidado, hour es /áuer/ con h muda.
• time flies: muy usado como exclamación → "Wow, time flies!" (¡cómo pasa el tiempo!).
• to take a rain check: origen del béisbol; significa "lo dejamos para otro día", no rechazar del todo.

Errores comunes del hispanohablante

• ✗ We arrived in time of the nick. → ✓ ...in the nick of time. (orden fijo)
• ✗ Let's call the day. → ✓ Let's call it a day. (no olvides it a)
• ✗ In the long term run. → ✓ In the long run. (no mezclar con "long term")
• ✗ The time is mature. → ✓ The time is ripe. (idiom fijo, no traducir)
• ✗ I want to take a rain check on the dinner. → ✓ ...a rain check on dinner. (sin artículo, dinner genérico)
• ✗ I'm pressed of time. → ✓ I'm pressed for time. (preposición for)
