Al terminar usarás could/might have en la cláusula resultado del 3º condicional.
Formarás la inversión formal sin if: Had I known...

📖 Clase (60 min)

Introducción y contexto

Ya formas el tercer condicional básico y los modales del arrepentimiento. Hoy subimos al registro B2 alto / C1: las variaciones estilísticas que distinguen a un hablante avanzado. Primero, la cláusula resultado no siempre lleva would have: puede llevar could have (habría podido) o might have (quizá habría) para matizar la certeza. Segundo, el inglés formal y escrito a menudo elimina el if y usa la inversión: Had I known en lugar de If I had known — muy elegante, frecuente en literatura, discursos y escritura formal. Tercero, hay maneras de implicar un tercer condicional sin frase condicional: otherwise, or, but for, if it hadn't been for.

Estas estructuras aparecen en exámenes de C1 (especialmente en Use of English y transformations) y dan a tu inglés un toque sofisticado. No son difíciles si entiendes la lógica; el reto para el hispanohablante es reconocerlas y producirlas porque el español no tiene una inversión equivalente directa.

Explicación detallada (regla por regla)

Regla 1 — could have / might have en el resultado.

If I had had your number, I could have called you. (habría podido — capacidad/posibilidad)
If we had left earlier, we might have arrived on time. (quizá habríamos — probabilidad menor)
would have = resultado seguro; could have = posible; might have = incierto.

Regla 2 — Inversión formal: omitir if + invertir had y sujeto. Solo en tercer condicional (con had):

If I had known → Had I known, I would have acted differently.
If she had not lied → Had she not lied, we would have trusted her. (negativa: had + sujeto + not, NO hadn't).
If they had asked → Had they asked, I would have helped.

⚠️ En la inversión negativa NO se contrae: ✗ Hadn't I known → ✓ Had I not known. Registro formal/escrito; suena culto.

Regla 3 — otherwise (= "si no", "de lo contrario"). Implica el condicional sin escribirlo:

I set three alarms. Otherwise, I would have overslept. (= If I hadn't set them, I would have overslept.)
Luckily she warned me; otherwise I would have made a big mistake.

Regla 4 — or (else) con valor condicional.

He must have apologized, or she wouldn't have forgiven him. (= If he hadn't apologized, she wouldn't have forgiven him.)

Regla 5 — but for + sustantivo / if it hadn't been for + sustantivo (= "de no haber sido por"). Introduce la causa única que cambió todo:

But for your help, I would have failed. (formal)
If it hadn't been for your help, I would have failed. (más conversacional)
Without your help, I wouldn't have managed. (la forma más sencilla)

Regla 6 — Had it not been for (inversión de la anterior, muy formal):

Had it not been for the rain, the match would have continued.

Regla 7 — Resumen de equivalencias. Estas frases dicen lo mismo:

If you hadn't helped me, I would have failed.
Had you not helped me, I would have failed.
But for your help, I would have failed.
If it hadn't been for your help, I would have failed.
You helped me; otherwise I would have failed.

otherwise /ˈʌðəwaɪz/ — tres sílabas, acento en la primera.
En la inversión Had I known, Had es tónica al inicio; suena formal y enfática.
but for y but for van seguidos de sustantivo o pronombre, nunca de cláusula completa: ✗ But for you helped me → ✓ But for your help.
otherwise normalmente va seguido de coma cuando inicia la frase.

✗ Hadn't I known... → ✓ Had I not known... (negativa sin contracción)
