Día 185 · Pasado simple vs. pasado continuo al narrar
⏱️ Duración total: ~3 h 15 min — Clase 60 min · Ejercicios 60 min · Reto 60 min · Quiz ~15 min.
📖 Clase (60 min)
Regla 1 — Pasado simple = hechos completos y secuencia.
- I woke up, had breakfast and left home. → Me desperté, desayuné y salí de casa.
Regla 2 — Pasado continuo = escenario / acción en curso / descripción.
- It was raining and the streets were empty. The wind was blowing hard. → Llovía y las calles estaban vacías. El viento soplaba fuerte.
Regla 3 — Juntos: el continuo pone el fondo, el simple cuenta el hecho.
- I was walking in the park when I saw an old friend.
- I was reading a book when she called. (no terminé de leerlo)
- I read a book and then she called. (terminé de leer, luego pasó lo otro)
Regla 5 — Acciones simultáneas.
- While she was cooking, he was setting the table. → Mientras ella cocinaba, él ponía la mesa. (dos acciones largas a la vez)
Regla 6 — Verbos de estado: siempre pasado simple.
be, have (poseer), know, like, love, hate, want, need, believe, understand, seem, remember:
- ✗ I was knowing the answer. → ✓ I knew the answer.
- ✗ She was wanting to leave. → ✓ She wanted to leave.
Esquema mental para narrar:
| Pregunta que te haces | Tiempo |
|---|---|
| ¿Es el decorado / qué pasaba alrededor? | Pasado continuo |
| ¿Es un hecho que avanza la trama? | Pasado simple |
| ¿Una acción larga interrumpida por otra corta? | larga = continuo, corta = simple |
| ¿Es un verbo de estado (know, want…)? | Pasado simple siempre |

Gramática a fondo
| Función narrativa | Tiempo | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| Escenario / clima / ambiente | continuo | The sun was shining. |
| Acción en curso de fondo | continuo | I was waiting at the bus stop. |
| Secuencia de hechos | simple | I got in, paid and sat down. |
| Verbo de estado | simple | I felt scared. |
Mini-modelo de párrafo (analízalo):
It was a cold morning. The streets were getting busy and people were rushing to work. I was waiting for the bus when I noticed a wallet on the ground. I picked it up, opened it and found an ID. I decided to take it to the police.
- Continuo (fondo): were getting, were rushing, was waiting.
- Simple (hechos): was, noticed, picked, opened, found, decided.
- ✗ I was waiting the bus when I was seeing a wallet. → ✓ I was waiting for the bus when I saw a wallet.
- ✗ Yesterday I was going to school and I was meeting my friend (para hechos) → ✓ Yesterday I went to school and met my friend.
- ✗ It was rain. → ✓ It was raining.
- ✗ I was knowing him. → ✓ I knew him.
- ✗ When I arrived, she cooked (si estaba en proceso) → ✓ When I arrived, she was cooking.
Mini-lectura de ejemplo
Last Saturday I was relaxing at home. The TV was on and rain was falling softly. Suddenly, someone knocked on the door. I stood up, walked to the door and opened it. My neighbour was standing there with a strange box. "I found this in the garden," she said. While she was explaining, I noticed the box was moving. We opened it and a small kitten jumped out!
